One of the reasons dates conquered the ancient world is that they keep. Handled well, a date crosses seasons and oceans without losing its character. Here’s how to store them properly — at home or in a warehouse.
At home
- Soft and semi-dried dates: airtight container. Weeks at cool room temperature, several months refrigerated, and up to a year frozen with little texture loss.
- Dried dates (chuhara): a sealed jar in the pantry is enough — they’ll happily sit for a year or more.
- Keep them away from strong smells. Dates absorb odours; don’t shelve them beside onions or spices.
The sugar bloom question
White patches on stored dates are usually crystallised sugar, not mould — a cosmetic change common in older soft dates. Mould looks fuzzy and smells off; sugar bloom is dry and dissolves if warmed. Brief gentle heat restores appearance.
For commercial buyers
Shelf life starts at the farm: fruit dried to the right moisture, packed clean and stored cool travels beautifully. In your warehouse, target cool, dry and ventilated; refrigerated storage extends soft-date programmes considerably. Vacuum packing — which we offer on most formats — buys additional months and protects against humidity swings in transit.
Every Sky Star shipment carries pack dates and storage guidance on the carton. Questions about a specific format? Ask us — we’d rather you store it right than buy it twice.
